Interview with Teng Mingguang: Controversies on Fluoride-Free Air Conditioning

Recently, there has been a controversy over the non-fluorinated inverter air conditioners in the industry. On this issue, the editor of the Chinese Chemical Industry Network, Jun Jun, was drafted by Mr. Teng Mingguang.

Controversy about non-fluorinated air conditioners: Dong Mingzhu's question deserves attention from the fluorine chemical industry and its counterparts in the air conditioning industry! We do not need to pay attention to Dong Mingzhu's other intentions of raising this issue, but Dong Mingzhu has indeed corrected a real mistake in our fluorine chemical industry and air-conditioning industry. In fact, in our domestic fluorine chemical industry colleagues, from the outset, we wanted to correct the erroneous concept of non-fluorinated air-conditioning, but the refrigeration industry's strong propaganda and hype green air-conditioning, despite the call of the fluorine chemical industry colleagues will not help.

At present, we need to understand several issues: 1. Variable frequency and non-fluorine are two concepts: frequency conversion is the operation mode of the compressor, and fluorine-free is the type of refrigerant, and fluorine-free air-conditioning refers to the refrigerant;

2. Relevant person in charge of some air-conditioning companies responded that the R410A refrigerant currently used in non-fluorinated inverter air conditioners does not damage the ozone layer although it contains a small amount of fluorine. This concept is wrong! The molecular formula of R22: CHClF2; while R410A is a 50% mixture of R125 (C2HF5) and R32 (CH2F2), and the amount of fluorine in R410A (76%) greatly exceeds R22 (44%). The amount of fluorine is not a measure of the scale of the ozone layer!

3. Professor Li Gang, an expert in refrigeration industry in China, said: In the global air conditioning industry, it is customary to refer to CFC-free or HFC as a non-fluorinated air conditioner, which is basically consistent with our country’s general abbreviation. This is to deceive the Chinese people not to know the English word. People are very clear about it. It is CFC-free, and it is a non-CFC-based concept.

4. What is worth noting at present in the ODS alternatives is the substitution of natural substances: alternatives including carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, etc. These are true non-fluorine alternatives, and are widely used in air conditioning due to the flammability of hydrocarbon substitutes. Still need further study and improvement.

5. In addition, it should be reminded that the requirement of ODS substitutes is not only not to destroy the ozone layer, but also to meet the greenhouse effect. Therefore, it is also unethical to deceive people with non-fluorine and green air-conditioning advertisements.

In the current era of ODS alternative research and development, it is extenuating to have such problems, but we, as associations and experts, should tell the truth to the people and not mislead the public in commercial advertisements. The controversy goes!

I think the current non-fluorinated air conditioning (referring to the use of R410A refrigerant, etc.) should be unified with the international CFC-free, called CFC-free air conditioners, so that the concept is clear, and can be distinguished with the future of the real fluoride-free air conditioner.
