KGI analyst Guo Mingchi recently claimed that he believes Apple's iWatch smart watch will be available for sale at the end of next year, rather than many market observers expected this year. This watch will use a 1.5 to 2 inch display, focusing on biometrics and in-depth integration with existing iOS devices.
In a report to investors, Guo Mingchi said he expects that Apple will indeed introduce a wearable accessory called iWatch in the future, but this product will not show up soon.
Unlike other analysts, Guo Mingchi believes that Apple will begin production of iWatch in the second half of next year, which is more than a year later than most current forecasts. However, in predicting the launch cycle of Apple products, Guo Mingchi's news has been more accurate.
Guo Mingchi mentioned in the report that Apple’s first attempt in the wearable computing market should be a watch called “iWatch†rather than a device like Google Glass. In order to support his own remarks, Guo Mingchi pointed out that Apple's recent patent application relates to curved screens and batteries.
In addition, Guo Mingchi claimed a few days ago that iWatch will use a 1.5 or 2 inch display panel. However, the device may use the existing GF2 touchscreen technology (similar to the iPad mini and iPod nano) instead of the OLED panel because the former is very suitable for small-size screens. The production of iWatch displays may be handed over to Japanese or Korean suppliers.
Interestingly, Guo Mingchi believes that iWatch will have a "secure user identification mechanism" and biometrics, both of which will become the device's main selling point. With biometric technology, iWatch can better prevent the use of unauthorized users while providing advanced health care features. Currently, some wearable devices such as Nike FuelBand provide pedometers and heart rate monitoring. If these features will also be added to Apple iWatch, it may open up new opportunities for the health care hardware industry.
In addition, iWatch will use an application processor similar to the iPod nano, which will allow integration with Apple's existing iOS device ecosystem.
As for the 2014 release time, Guo Mingchi said that Apple may not have the resources to restructure such an iWatch on the iOS platform, because it requires a major change to the operating system. Similarly, because wearable computing devices are still an emerging product category, the supply of components is not enough to meet the potential for high demand. Guo Mingchi believes that the production of iWatch may not begin until the second half of next year.
