In South Korea, a regulation that came into effect in January this year severely controls the import of genetically modified seeds. An official from the Ministry of Agriculture revealed that imported or indigenous genetically modified seeds were not used for commercial planting. Despite the high food prices, the authorities did not consider relaxing the regulations.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Bangkok pointed out that there is no indication that the governments of Asian countries are strongly promoting the use of genetically modified seeds. He Changchou, representative of the Asian region of the organization, pointed out that with modern agricultural technology, countries can produce enough food without using such seeds.
Xie Yang of the Development Research Center of the State Council of China stated that China does not allow the consumption of genetically modified cereals, including seeds, but indirect manufactured foods, such as edible oils, are not banned but must be labeled.
