Vietnam is forced to import coal

Business Club July 25th, due to high demand and reduced supply, Vietnam is increasingly becoming a coal importer. Last month, the state-owned mining giant Vietnam Coal Industry Group accepted the first batch of imported domestic coal processing in the country's history.

95.7 tons of coal imported from Indonesia arrived at Ho Chi Minh Port. These coals will be used as fuel for thermal power plants in the central and southern regions.

According to the Vietnam Coal Industry Group, Vietnam has been a coal exporter for decades because of its large coal deposits. However, because buying imported coal is cheaper than extracting domestic coal, imports become necessary.

Imported low-energy bituminous coal used for power generation is more popular than domestically-used energy-intensive anthracite coal. Vu Manh Hung, deputy deputy director of the Vietnam Coal Mining Group, said: “We should sell our high-quality coal and import cheap coal. The power plant has been told that it must not waste the use of anthracite power.”
