According to the latest data from MRC DataScope, the total volume of HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) in Ukraine in the first four months of this year was 32,300 tons, down 29 percentage points from the same period last year. Market analysts said that the sharp decline in the number of Ukrainian HDPE imports was mainly due to political instability and currency depreciation.
In April of this year, Ukraine imported only 5,400 tons of HDPE, a record low in recent years. Local traders said that the country’s domestic political situation was unstable in the first quarter of 2014, coupled with currency depreciation. These two factors have greatly reduced the purchase of Ukrainian buyers in overseas markets (such as Russia, Europe, the Middle East, etc.).
In the first four months of this year, Ukrainian film-grade HDPE imports totaled 12,900 tons, down from 20,000 tons in the same period last year.
For pipe-grade HDPE, the country's plastic imports in January-April were 840 tons, a sharp drop from the previous year's 5,400, a drop of 35%.
Ukraine's total imports of blown-grade HDPE in January-April were 6,200 tons, down 25 percentage points from the same period last year. Among them, the plastic imports in April were only 1,600 tons.
Unlike other grades of materials, injection-grade HDPE is the only plastic in Ukraine that has seen an increase in imports in the first four months of this year. The data shows that the total import volume of injection-grade HDPE in the country was 6,600 tons in January-April, an increase of 15% over the same period last year.
