According to a report on the website of the British “Independenceâ€, the British government will invest 56 million pounds in the next three years to fund the research and development of “mini†nuclear power plants. The government stated in a statement that the funds will be used to evaluate the performance of advanced small reactor modules (SMRs) and accelerate their development. SMRs use existing or new nuclear power technologies and are miniature versions of larger nuclear power plants. The power generation will be 1/10 of that of large nuclear power plants.
The company that developed this technology stated that the “mini†nuclear power plant will help solve the problem of energy shortage that the United Kingdom may face in the near future, and its cost is much lower than that of large-scale nuclear power plants. There are many old and large nuclear power plants in the UK that are about to “end their lives.†In order to implement the emission reduction agreement, many coal power plants in the UK will also be shut down. As a result, by 2030, the UK’s power generation will be reduced to half of the current level.
Although such nuclear power plants are still under construction, developers say that around 2025, these nuclear power plants may be able to deploy power generation. However, critics say developers may not be able to guarantee that the cost of such nuclear power plants will be reduced to economically viable levels.
Richard Harrington, the British energy minister, said: "Nuclear power plants are an important energy component that can provide us with low-carbon electricity, and new methods help promote British innovation."
The British government also intends to provide £86 million to the Calum Nuclear Fusion Research Center to fund nuclear fusion research. They are also currently assessing potential sites and hope to find suitable sites for the construction of a nuclear power plant with a generating capacity of 1 billion watts.
