Sumitomo Electric Industries of Japan has developed the world's lightest submarine transmission cable. By developing a new technology that can reduce the use of copper, the main material of the cable, by 30%, Sumitomo Electric can reduce the costs of transportation and installation and construction. Sumitomo Electric has now obtained orders for submarine transmission cables connecting Great Britain and Belgium. The cable is about 130 kilometers long and the order amount is about 30 billion yen.
The use of ships to transport round-shaped transmission cables is expected to add 4 trillion yen to the market demand for submarine transmission cables in the next 10 years, driven by the construction boom of offshore wind power stations in Europe.
Sumitomo Electric will first obtain orders for submarine transmission projects between the two countries that are planned by transmission companies in the United Kingdom and Belgium. The newly-developed transmission cable will deliver 1 million kilowatts of electricity at a high pressure of 400,000 volts, which is equivalent to a nuclear power unit.
Sumitomo Electric's new transmission cable improved the insulation of the wrapped copper wire, weighing only about 30 tons per kilometer of cable. Copper will not be conductive when the temperature rises, and the new insulating material effectively prevents the temperature from rising. Even if the amount of copper contained in the cable is reduced by more than 30%, the same performance can be maintained.
In the global market, Europe is the biggest traction force. Transmission demand between islands in Southeast Asia, Indonesia, the Philippines and other countries will generate market demand. Sumitomo Electric believes that the cost competitiveness of this technology will help to compete with Chinese companies.
