Solar Junction, a Solar Valley company in Silicon Valley, has set a world record for the energy efficiency of solar cells to be put into commercial production. Solar Junction is a developer of high efficiency multi-junction solar cells for the Concentrating Photovoltaic (CPV) market.
Viijit Sabnis, Vice President of Solar Junction Technology Department, said: "Break our world record created by ourselves to consolidate the position of Solar Junction as an innovative company and leader in the field of multi-junction batteries. We continue to break through technical constraints and further reduce the cost of concentrating photovoltaics."
When the sunshine intensity was 947, the Solar Junction battery's power conversion efficiency was 44%, which broke the company’s April record of 43.5% of the sunshine intensity of 418 hours. Both records are certified by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
Solar Junction's new record once again proves the value of its A-SLAMTM material, which lays the foundation for concentrator photovoltaic system manufacturers to provide the most efficient solar-to-electrical conversion. Concentrating photovoltaic panels function by concentrating sunlight into the small multi-junction cells produced by Solar Junction at the San Jose plant.
Just before this announcement, Solar Junction successfully completed a round of investment, won a 5MW order and won several industry awards. Earlier this year, Solar Junction and IQE, the world's leading supplier of epitaxial wafers, signed an investment and manufacturing agreement to put Solar Junction's market-leading SJ3TM solar cell products into mass production.
In addition, under the support of the US Department of Energy's SUNPATH contract, Solar Junction put into trial operation in the 6-inch product manufacturing plant in Silicon Valley and began delivery in the first quarter of 2013.
