The purpose of these papers is to enhance the innovation of the machine tool industry with creative solutions that are as viable as possible.

The proposed topic should contribute to one of the following areas:

−Innovative machine tool solutions or components for precision machining tools

−New materials for machine building

− Simulation model of tool machine dynamics and thermal behavior

− Tool machine control and sensing solutions

− Innovative development or continued development of processing technology, especially in hard machining, such as grinding, hard cars, etc.

The submitted papers were evaluated by a professional review board. The jury consists of Dr. Konrad Wegener, Ph.D., of the Institute of Tool Machine Tooling and Processing at the Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Dr. Heinrich Mushardt of UNITEDGRINDINGGroup, and Frank Fiebelkorn, Ph.D., Ph.D., Director of Production R&D and Technology at FritzStuder AG. The judging criteria include the feasibility of the innovation in the machine tool industry, the novelty and creativity of the research paper, the scientific content, the form, and the correctness of the statements and conclusions.

At the beginning of February 2015, the winners were presented at the MotionMeeting press conference (annual STUDER, SCHAUDT and MIKROSA agent training).

Dr. Eduardo Weingärtner from the Institute of Tool Machine Tools and Manufacturing at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (Switzerland) with his subject «On-MachineWireElectricalDischargeDressingofMetalBondedGrindingWheels

Dr. Weingärtner's research focuses on wire-cut corrosion as an alternative to metal-bonded diamond wheel dressing. Dr. Weingärtner is not only working on the development and integration of a spark erosion finisher into the grinding machine, but also on the modeling, simulation and optimization of the EDM process. During his essay writing, he developed a special wire delivery device that was seen as a key point in the feasibility of a reliable finishing process because the accuracy and efficiency of the process can be significantly improved. With the thermoelectric model developed by Dr. Weingärtner, the discharge corrosion capacity of the material can be predicted, the influence of the relative speed on the electrocorrosion process can be better understood, and the diamond graphitization phenomenon can be analyzed.
