LANXESS is expanding its range of laser-transmissive polyamide 6 and polyamide 66, as well as PBT compounds (polybutylene terephthalate) for laser transmission welding.
Frank Krause, a welding technology specialist at LANXESS's High Performance Materials (HPM) business unit, said: "We are introducing these new products, primarily for the growing needs of sensors, control units and display system enclosures, such as electrification of vehicle drives and drivers. The application in the auxiliary system and the need for automatic driving."
All new compound products are characterized by high transmission properties for light from the near-infrared range, which is commonly used for laser transmission welding.
The welding process produces less thermal and mechanical stress than vibration, ultrasonic and infrared welding.
LANXESS introduces new polyamide and polyester materials for laser transmission welding
The new compounds from LANXESS include the halogen-free flame retardant Durethan AKV30FN04LT. In the case of a wall thickness of up to 1.5 mm, the light transmittance of the polyamide 66 is still relatively high in the wavelength range of the laser welding.
The other three new polyamides are also optimized for lower electrical corrosion risks, such as the Durethan AKV25H3.0LT, which is particularly suitable as a material for high- and short-term thermal load components.
Polyamide 66 is a glass fiber reinforced type that contains a metal and halide free heat stabilizer to enhance thermal stability.
The two innovative products that LANXESS introduced in polyester are the Pocan C1202LT and C3230LT, both of which are a mixture of materials for PBT and polycarbonate (PC).
The Pocan C1202LT has been used to produce a tailgate handle system with waterproof sealed electronics.
