A Japanese solar company named Kaneka developed a thin-film solar cell made of silicon that increased conversion efficiency to 26.3%, 0.7% higher than the original highest conversion efficiency record of 25.6%.
The theoretical limit of the conversion efficiency of silicon-based solar cells is 29%, but in daily practice, the actual conversion efficiency is only around 20%. Kaneka's researchers looked at the lost energy between theory and practice in order to find ways to reach the theoretical limit of 29% conversion efficiency.
To minimize energy loss, the researchers used a thin-film heterojunction to create an 180.4-cm2 solar cell. A low-resistance electrode was placed on the back of the cell to maximize the amount of photons collected at the front. The front of the cell had a layer.
