The solution was developed by scientists at the Finnish National Technology Research Center (VTT) and uses nano-cellulose-a material composed of microscopic cellulose fibers in wood pulp.
Allegedly, the solid content of gel-like nanocellulose produced using a patented technology called HefCel (high-concentration enzymatic fibrosis of cellulose) is 10 times that of similar materials. Therefore, when applied to wood-nanocellulose naturally adheres to wood-it is very suitable for forming an airtight barrier so that oxygen does not reach the wood surface. This means that the possibility of wood burning when exposed to flames is significantly reduced.
It is reported that the coating is particularly useful when mixed with pigments and then applied to the wood in the form of sprayed or brushed paint or stains. According to reports, preliminary batches of HefCel coatings performed well in laboratory tests and have developed energy-saving production processes. Scientists are working to expand this process to make it simpler and more efficient. They are still looking for industry partners to help commercialize the technology.
