Among all fuels, hydrogen has the highest energy per unit mass. The energy produced by burning one kilogram of hydrogen can reach 33.3 kWh, which is three times that of conventional fuel. However, due to the low ambient temperature density of hydrogen, the energy per unit volume is also low. Therefore, it is necessary to develop advanced storage methods that can withstand extremely high pressures and provide high energy density.
DSM is leveraging its materials expertise to develop a safer, more efficient and lighter hydrogen tank. Bert Keestra, application development engineer at DSM, said: "We have developed a technology for compressed natural gas (CNG) tanks. DSM develops new material solutions for high pressure composite hydrogen storage tanks
This two-part tank is lined with a blown-molded engineering plastic, Akulon FuelLock, based on a single 6 polyamide, which has a very high hydrocarbon barrier. The can body can then be further reinforced in a unidirectional (UD) continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic tape made of EcoPaXX polyamide 410. The combination of these two commercially available materials is very effective in CNG tanks, and DSM is currently testing whether it has the same effect in hydrogen tanks. If feasible, this would be the lightest plastic canister for hydrogen storage.
It is lining with Akulon FuelLock, which can effectively reduce the weight of the tank compared with the metal lining. Compared with the polyolefin lining, it improves the permeability and can effectively prevent the gas from penetrating outward; this lining material is still 100% recyclable and very safe, does not fall off; in addition, at very low temperatures (-40 ° C), the material still retains toughness and strength. These properties are very important for CNG and are even more important for hydrogen tanks with higher working pressures.
