The "white pollution" caused by waste plastics is currently one of the most thorny environmental issues faced by all countries in the world. The annual output of hundreds of millions of tons of polyethylene is the largest production of plastic products, but also one of the most inert and stable polymer materials, it is difficult to degrade. At present, the vast majority of waste plastics are mainly disposed of by landfills and incineration. However, the former occupies land resources and can easily pollute groundwater, while the latter increases carbon emissions and can also cause atmospheric pollution.

In the new study, scientists used a cross-alkane metathesis catalytic strategy to use low-cost low-carbon alkane as a reagent and solvent for recombination reactions with polyethylene, effectively reducing the molecular weight and carbon chain length of polyethylene. Low-carbon alkane is a byproduct produced in large quantities in petroleum refining and cannot be used as fuel or natural gas, and its use value is very limited.

Huang Zheng told Xinhua News Agency reporters that in this system, the excessive presence of low-carbon alkanes is like “scissors”, and it has repeatedly reacted with polyethylene until the polyethylene with molecular weight of tens of thousands or even millions of millions is degraded to be cleanable. He said that the new technology can degrade all types of polyethylene, including high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, and linear low-density polyethylene, and the catalyst is compatible with various additives in commercial-grade polyethylene. In real life, this technology can be used to degrade a variety of polyethylene waste plastics, including waste plastic bottles, plastic waste films, and waste plastic bags.

At present, high-temperature pyrolysis is used to degrade polyethylene. However, this method often requires a reaction temperature exceeding 400 degrees Celsius, and produces very complicated products, including gas, oil, wax, coke, etc., and has low utility value. The new method has a reaction temperature of between 150 and 200 degrees Celsius. Regardless of the structure of the polyethylene waste plastic, the products are mainly linear alkanes, mainly C9 to C22 alkanes that can be used as diesel fuel, and can also be used as additives.
