China made breakthroughs in the use of nuclear technology to treat industrial wastewater. A scientific research achievement of civil nuclear technology—"China Guangdong Nuclear Technology Electron Beam Treatment of Industrial Wastewater Technology", on the 21st obtained scientific and technological achievements appraisal certificate, and completed the appraisal of scientific and technological achievements organized by the China Nuclear Energy Industry Association.
China General Nuclear Power Group, headquartered in Shenzhen, said that its China General Nuclear Nuclear Technology Development Co., Ltd. ("CGN") and Tsinghua University jointly announced the latest "China's first, world's leading" technology. CGN Tech and Tsinghua University will also jointly establish the “Earth Beam and Environmental Technology Application Joint Research Center†to promote the basic research of China’s electron beam technology in the field of environmental protection, the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and the promotion of industrialization.
Electron beam irradiation technology, as an important solution to the treatment of refractory wastewater, was listed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as the main research direction for the peaceful use of atomic energy in the 21st century.

The appraisal committee believes that the technology of electron beam treatment of industrial waste water is the first of its kind in China. It breaks through the technical bottleneck of the current difficult-to-degrade wastewater treatment. Once large-scale industrialization is realized, it can greatly improve China's industrial wastewater treatment level. This technology combines bio-technical advanced treatment of industrial wastewater technology, with lower cost and higher degree of purification. It can achieve high-standard discharge of waste water or reuse of recycled water, and is expected to solve the "global problems" of refractory wastewater treatment.
Wang Jianlong, vice president of the Nuclear Energy and New Energy Technology Research Institute of Tsinghua University, said that although it belongs to the field of nuclear technology applications, the electron beam treatment wastewater technology does not use radionuclides and does not generate any radiation after power failure; the second is that the electron accelerator has been realized. The safety interlock design ensures that power can be quickly and promptly turned off in the event of any unexpected condition and protection measures are implemented. In addition, industrial wastewater is not radioactive after undergoing electron beam irradiation and has no effect on the environment.
Zhang Jianfeng, chairman of CGN Tech, stated that CGN Tech has successively carried out research on electron beam irradiation technology, wastewater treatment process innovation, key equipment manufacturing, and technical specification preparation. China’s first electron beam irradiation was completed in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province in March this year. The demonstration project of printing and dyeing wastewater treatment has achieved satisfactory results.
On the same day, CGN Tech also signed a cooperation agreement with the Hengchang Group on the treatment of printing and dyeing wastewater, showing that for the first time, China's electron beam technology has achieved real industrial application. (Reporter Zheng Xiaohong)
