Application of diatomaceous earth as insecticide

Diatomaceous earth is a widely distributed sedimentary rock that is easily ground into powder and has strong water absorption. Diatomaceous earth can kill insects because every fine particle of its powder has very sharp edges. When it comes into contact with pests, it can penetrate the surface of the pests and even enter the pests, which can not only cause pests to breathe, digest and reproduce. The system, such as exercise, is disordered, and it can absorb 3-4 times of its own weight of water, causing the body fluid of the pest to drop sharply and die after losing more than 10% of body fluid.

According to the insecticidal mechanism of diatomaceous earth, there are two ways to produce insecticides by using diatomaceous earth as the main raw material and other auxiliary materials.

One is based on assassination. The diatomaceous earth is pulverized, and after appropriate atomization, it can be acicular particles capable of killing pests, and then sugar, corn starch, dextrin, sucrose honey, soybean powder, or the like can be incorporated as an attracting component. This diatomaceous earth insecticide can quickly attract pests, and then the needle-like particles pierce the surface of the pest. The more the pests struggle, the deeper the thorns, resulting in death. The representative formula is diatomaceous earth 66%, corn. It is composed of 1.5% starch, 1.5% dextrin, 3% soybean powder, and 28% sucrose honey.

The second is to absorb the body fluids that consume pests. This diatomaceous earth insecticide has strong sorption and is easy to adhere to the surface of the pest. Puncture into the body of the pest, causing it to lose water and die. For example, 46 g of diatomaceous earth, 75 ml of sodium silicate having a Baume degree of 40, and 25 ml of a 30% aqueous solution of fluorosilicic acid are mixed with 1500 ml of water, mixed well, and allowed to stand and solidify for 30 minutes. At the end of solidification, 125 ml of 10% ammonia water was added. After 30 minutes, it is washed, filtered, dried, ground, and passed through a 325 mesh sieve. The sieve can be used to kill insects.

Studies have shown that new insecticides made from diatomaceous earth can kill moth larvae, worms, mites, beetles, fleas, scorpions, bedbugs, mosquitoes, flies and other pests for controlling crop pests. The storage of grain and seeds and the removal of parasites from poultry and livestock are very effective.
